Harley Davidson Helmets
Harley Davidson helmets are about as individual as the men and women who
ride Harleys. They’re designed to provide protection to the head, an
area prone to severe injury in the unfortunate event of a fall, but can
do so only if they’re worn. As basic as it might seem, many Harley
Davidson riders often find themselves dealing with the question of
“Should I wear the helmet or shouldn’t I?”
In many states, wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle is not a
choice; it’s a matter of law. Those riders living (or riding) in states
where no laws govern helmet use however, have a choice. For those riders
who make the smart choice and opt to wear Harley Davidson helmets, here
is the information they need.
Of utmost importance is that Harley Davidson helmets fit properly.
Improperly fitting helmets won’t offer a bit of protection when you need
it most. The helmet should be tight-fitting but comfortable; it
shouldn’t move as your head moves or “float” on your head while riding.
The helmet shouldn’t obstruct visibility, either. All Harley Davidson
helmets meet DOT requirements for safety so your only choice from there
is whether you want a half helmet, a full-face helmet or an open face
helmet.
Harley Davidson half helmets cover only down to the ears and are a good
choice when riding in hot weather conditions because they leave the head
cooler. Because of this helmet’s limited coverage though, much of the
face as well as the sides of the head will be unprotected in a fall;
something that needs to be considered. To protect the eyes, the
motorcycle should have a windshield. If it doesn’t, it’s a good idea to
purchase a half-helmet face shield that snaps on.
Full-face Harley Davidson helmets provide the rider with the most head
and face protection. Because this style fully covers the head down to
the neck, it will have a tendency to be hot. Fortunately Harley
designers think of everything and for warm weather riding, they’ve
created helmets with air-flow ventilation systems. Full-face helmets
should have a visor to provide visibility and protection from bugs and
other flying debris. Visors on these helmets are designed to
conveniently flip-up and down as necessary.
The open face, or ¾ Harley Davidson helmets are going to protect the top
and sides of the head but the chin and face won’t have any protection
except for the shield that snaps on and keeps flying debris away from
the eyes and face. Although more comfortable in warm weather, these
helmets still do make the head hot which is why they, too come with
ventilation systems.
Like all things Harley Davidson, plenty of add-ons are available for
helmets. They can be dressed up with Harley decals, face shields can be
added when necessary, and visors or liners can also be replaced. To
carry it all, Harley Davidson makes several helmet bags. Harley Davidson
helmets – combining safety features with good looks – the way it should
be.
